Alta Vista was developed in 1995. It was one of the earliest search engines that developed tools for users to search multi-media content on the internet such as Images and Video content, as well as Text.

With the growth of Portal sites, like Yahoo! and MSN, stand alone search engines have become more specialised and now Alta Vista uses content from Yahoo!s search database.
