L'objectif de la licence GNU GPL (General Public Licence) est de garantir à l'utilisateur les droits suivants (appelés libertés) sur un programme informatique (ou logiciel) :

GNU est l'acronyme pour GNU's Not Unix, le nom à été choisis car il est concu comme Unix, mais se différencie du fait qu'il ne contient que des logiciels libre et pas de code Unix. On l'associe généralement à Linux (GNU/Linux) ou BSD (GNU/BSD) pour avoir un système complet et fonctionnel.
