Mini:Mormon

Mormon is a nickname for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Mormon Church is headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah. While quite conservative recently, the church historically practiced polygamy. Mormons consider themselves Christians, and, in addition to the Bible, look also to revelations revealed to their founder. Joseph Smith, by the Angel Moroni which, for the most part, are contained in the Book of Mormon and The Pearl of Great Price.

The Church is governed by a First President and a Quorum of Twelve Apostles who from time to time, receive revelation refining the practices of the Church. There is no regular clergy, with members of the congregation, or "ward" serving that role, with the most prominent leader being a Bishop The Book of Mormon is believed by Mormons to be a record of the pre-history of The Americas, one of the lost tribes of Israel having migrated to The New World from Israel. Following the Resurrection of Christ, according to the Book of Mormon, Christ (edit) is said to have appeared to believers in the New World.

It is customary for the young people of the Church to engage in missionary work, usually as a team of two Mormon missionaries. The Church maintains a system of Mormon Temples at which rituals such as baptism and marriage are preformed. A notable belief is that of celestial marriage which consists of a family of believers being reunited in Heaven (create) for eternity.

After their prophet and founder, Joseph Smith, Jr. was killed by a mob in Illinois in 1844, the Church suffered a succession crisis, from which Brigham Young emerged as leader of the largest faction. He led his followers on a trek to the Great Basin in the western United States, founding Salt Lake City on the shores of the Great Salt Lake in what is now Utah.
