Mini:Open source
Open source is a set of principles and practices on how to write software available through different licences. Literally “open source” means the source code is available to the users. The distribution terms of open-source software must comply with the following criteria:
- Free Redistribution
- Source Code
- Derived Works
- Integrity of The Author's Source Code
- No Discrimination Against Persons or Groups
- No Discrimination Against Fields of Endeavor
- Distribution of License
- License Must Not Be Specific to a Product
- License Must Not Restrict Other Software
- License Must Be Technology-Neutral
Since the community needs a reliable way of knowing whether a piece of software really is open source, OSI is registering a trademark, Open Source Initiative Approved™, for this purpose.
This term open source, introduced by Bruce Perens and Eric Raymond, is different from Free Software concept, introduced by Richard Stallman in the GNU Project.
