[edit] 100 results instead of 10
Hello. I would like the ability to return 100 results (or more maybe?) instead of 10. I don't want to register, could you do this with a cookie like Google? Thank you! 63.3.15.130 04:43, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] No preferences saved with out logging in
Hello! I would like to use your search without logging in. Why is it necessary to log in in order to use preferences? Why is this superior to Google? Why did you not choose to save preferences using a cookie? I don't really understand the need to register. Please change or explain if possible. Thanx. 63.3.15.130 04:57, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
- Those preferences are specific to the wiki. You don't need them in order to use the search engine. Closed. --Balinny 14:09, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

1) i choose daniele_will as username, but wikia system change it to "Daniele will" without any advice...
2) i tryed to login, no success :) requesting password by mail i discovered what is my "new user name" using it with tha new system pass... i try to register a new password...
3) lets login now! ... no way :(

[edit] Errors of importing less than 20 email contacts
Hello dream team,
I'm sorry to observe that I had regular errors when importing less than 20 email contacts from gmail. I can't invite any of them in wikia search. I will try later...
Have a nice day,
Daniel
[edit] Mailing list error
When I tried to enter your mailing list from the search.wikia page, I received the following:
- Mailman CGI error!!!
The Mailman CGI wrapper encountered a fatal error. This entry is being stored in your syslog: Failure to find group name for GID 501. Mailman expected the CGI wrapper to be executed as group "www", but the system's web server executed the wrapper as GID 501 for which the name could not be found. Try adding GID 501 to your system as "www", or tweak your web server to run the wrapper as group "www".
I know that somewhere in the support info there are instructions about mailing lists but I would have expected guidance here. Ipigott 16:11, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
- Do you mean the left link to http://lists.wikia.com/mailman/listinfo/search-l ? I don't get that error / It has been fixed. If it's still happening please report. --Balinny 14:31, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Tranparencies and background
You guys miss a default background in your stylesheet, or some transparency in the logo. I have set my browser's default one to gray, and the logo on the home page looks a little, umm, pre-alpha.
[edit] Mini Article Collapse link should be on top
Mini Article Collapse link should be on top, so one needs not to scroll down the whole article to collapse it, when it is not as "mini" as expected.
[edit] Non-JavaScript votes can be done using iframes or linking with target=hiddenframe
Non-JavaScript votes can be done using iframes (containing the stars) or linking with the Attribute target="hiddenframe" (of course a hidden frame taking the votes needs to be implemented).
- The function clickVoteStars seems to be doing it with POST. Fixed. --Balinny 14:34, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

The pages are not valid (X)HTML! This may brake compatibility with (future) browsers.
[edit] "contact us" and "terms of use" don't work
Hi, with Mozilla Firefox 2 both links only add a "#" to the current page which is not what I expected...
[edit] Doubled search
When I search anything, I get 2 lists of sites exactly the same, even with the "Results 11 to 20" doubled.
[edit] bug
on the main page of wikia search if i make a search pressing enter it does'nt work, only works if i click in "go"
- It is working now. Please repost providing your browser if you still experience problems. --Balinny 15:27, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Problem in link "Contact Us" in the bottom of the page
Hi there, first of all, congratulations in the launch of wiki search ;)
I wanted to write a message to know if the mini articles i put is not spam and i cannot find how.
The link " Contact Us" doesn´t work...
If the mini articles i put are spam, please forgive me. I don´t understand very well the diference...
Best regards and good luck. Seal
[edit] recover password functionality not working, or at least not user-friendly
Initially i thought that my Wikipedia login would work, so I tried to login and was unable. I tried to recover the password and constantly got the login screen. I was however able to create a login with the same username afresh.
- It shows an error "There is no user by the name Foo". Maybe related to search:Unresolved issues#IE login not working ? Closed. --Balinny 15:33, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] infinate expanding buttons
when searching for "dark and white trailquest" (incedently, trying to find the website darkandwhite.co.uk which does not seem to be in your database) the expansion button at the bottom of the page ("click for results 4 to 13") just seems to duplicate itself rather than open any further results. This seems to happen with every click, having reached 7 instances of the button and no further results i decided it was probably stuck in a repeat and not working correctly.
[edit] First result on search for fopen doesn't even include "fopen" in it's contents when using whitelist.
I was trying to find info on the C command fopen.
- It isn't crawled yet. It will appear. --Balinny 15:37, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] White Board
why doesn't white board come up with wikia search - shouldn't there be info. about and how to use white board on wikia search! alpha or not.
- Please explain better. --Balinny 15:38, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Skin footer links
Links to (About Us, Contact Us, ... ) do not link anywhere but to the current page with # appended. This navigation doesn't work in firefox. -- 69.66.38.203 20:37, 23 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Error with spaces in search terms - from search-bar in Firefox
Wikia search doesn't correctly execute queries with spaces when activated from the search bar on Firefox 2.0.0.11.
Using Firefox 2.0.0.11 and searching from the search bar, Firefox substitutes +'s for spaces in the URL when "URL encoding" the {search terms} element in an Open Search XML description file. Wikia search considers shaojun+wang (http://re.search.wikia.com/search#shaojun+wang) to be different than shaojun%20wang (http://re.search.wikia.com/search#shaojun%20wang), which is probably correct, but traditional behavior is otherwise (see Google, Yahoo).
[edit] your sign up page is blank-- can't sign up -- why??
I searched for my site & found it wasn't there so I wanted to write a mini article about it but couldn't until I signed in.. bummer,,,,,, Karen from Mymarketingadvisor.net
[edit] Search for ebay
When you search for ebay, www.ebay.com isn't even in the top 50 results
[edit] back button after exploring link > 11 return only results 1-10
IE7 WinXP
When
1. search for any item and select "Results 11 to 20" 2. select any search result link greater than 10 to navigate to the page 3. select the "back" button on the browser to return to Wikia Search results page 4. observe the search results displayed
expected result: the search results page would be the same as when I left it, displaying results 11-20
actual result; the search results page only shows results 1-10. This is also true if I view any search result in group 21-30, 31-40, etc.
I know the display of additional links is faster the way you built the page, but it is frustrating if you are working through high number search results and have to re-expand each time you return...
[edit] Case sensitive search
Searches seems to be case sensitive, which is a real drawback. I just entered a mini article for "SED TV", and it shows up with a search for "SED TV", but not for "sed tv"... It is unreasonable to have to enter the same article for every case of case...
- It's worse than you think. You probably also need Sed TV and so on. With multiple terms, including the names of people, you sometimes need to copy the mini several times, with and without capitals in various positions. Furthermore, if you use the keywording option for highlighting multi-word expressions, you will find you need to use an underscore instead of a space for them to fuction properly (e.g. Wikia_Search instead of Wikia Search, plus the same in lower case, etc.). This wastes a lot of valuable time in writing effective new wikis. We also need better guidance and help functions on this. Ipigott 08:13, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
Also, if I e.g. search for "sed tv review", I think that the mini article for "SED TV" also should show up. This means that several mini articles could potentially be shown for a single search.
I think that you should actually SEARCH the mini articles, not just do a simple matching of the exact search phrase...
When I think about it, I should have entered my mini article not for "SED TV", but for just "SED". There should be a way to change this in a simple way (maybe there is, I haven't checked this actually).
Sorry if this is more suggestions than bug reports.
[edit] Searching for Companies doesn't give the base-URL as first result
When typing "Microsoft" the first result should certainly be a link to http://www.microsoft.com or a similar base-name-startsite.
Currently you won't find any similar (to microsoft.com) result under the first 50 results...but links to nearly every subpage of microsoft.com featuring every product and service. Pages that are base-urls should be weighted statistically higher in the search-algorithm.
In my opinion a much needed change to improve the quality of the search.
Greetings

[edit] Goodbye to Netscape
Goodbye to Netscape, so sad. Hello Wikia search! so happy.
[edit] Language
It's good that you have links to sites with other languages, but I suspect that the majority of users want to have the results of their search show up in their own language first. I can't read either Dutch or Italian, but my search for "workflow" resulted in Dutch and Italian links on the first page of the search results. Didn't seem very useful.
This email a friend is hard to work I cant even send the darn email. I think best will be comma or one email per line
[edit] bug SHOWING RESULTS 37 TO 46
After a search with www.instructables.com and not getting a satisfatory result i started expanding the serch results. It went OK until RESULTS 37 TO 46. By click the botton it only showed another "RESULTS 37 TO 46"'s botton.
[edit] cannot log-in
Tried to log in but was denied log on due to "incorrect password".
reset password and logged in with the temporary, then changed the password (back to what it was in the first place), but again denied log on due to "incorrect password".
The password I was typing was correct, so there is definately a major bug in your user verification system.
My user name is Oneness.
- You should discuss that with Wikia Staff. Maybe there were special characters and there was codification mismatch? --Balinny 18:16, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] star rating system

[edit] Results 9 to 18 does not work
Results 1-10 of approximately 19for niederlandeweb shows 8 (!) results
Click on [Results 9 to 18] gives me only another button with [Results 9 to 18], but no more results.
[edit] 'Contact us' and 'Terms of Use' links not working.
Just now neither the 'contact us' nor the 'terms of use' links worked. I have just seen the BBC interview with Jimmy Wales at http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediaselector/check/player/nol/newsid_7200000/newsid_7209200?redirect=7209210.stm&news=1&bbwm=1&nbwm=1&bbram=1&nbram=1 and it appears that Wikia Search is a for profit project. I have no problem with Jimmy getting a good living from the project, but getting mega rich from it makes me reluctant about the time and effort I have so far and intend to put into the project. I am concerned that when it reaches a mature stage it will get compromised by advertising.
- Known bug. The process should make easy enough to anyone else to compete to discourage that. Anyway, you're welcome to discuss that on the mailing list. --Balinny 17:09, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] selecting more frm the 31-40 option
I searched for something and I click 31-40 and then under it it says 31-40 again. Basically, it seems to display 10 results for 31-40 and then has the heading again and displays 31-40 again.
[edit] logo
In order to continue with your excelent work, change the logo now... Looks like a fart.
A cloud would have less lines.
Regards.
I agree, it's a bit cr*p.... The symbol for Wikipedia is like a globe of puzzle shaped letters. Perhaps wikia search could be like a solar system of letters connecting. Just an idea, trying to maintain theme.
[edit] OpenSearch profile
There doesn't seem to be an OpenSearch profile configured for http://alpha.search.wikia.com/ . This is the little bit of HTML & XML magic that lets Firefox and IE7 add a new search engine to the search bar.
There's also, confusingly, an OpenSearch description for http://search.wikia.com/, but I think that's from MediaWiki, and I don't think it will work to search the search engine (rather than searching the MediaWiki instance... yes, I realize it's a fine distinction). --Evan Prodromou 00:38, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
I'm not sure if the correct etiquette is to "vote" for bug fixes here, but please fix this because I'm not going to use a search engine that isn't in my search toolbar. I'm sure others would be the same. It's a really simple thing to do. Just a little XML file and a link rel="search" type="application/opensearchdescription+xml" ... tag. --Rjmunro 23:55, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] hittites
Comparing Wikia Search with Google, so far I see little improvement in the handling of junk websites. For example, doing a search for Hittites produces a URL that is third from the top on the first page, a URL to a website that is to a large extent cut and paste, lifted from Wikipedia by a psychic pretending to be scientific and passing it off to many people as her creation - Crystalinks.com. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Fsmitha (talk • contribs).

[edit] Privacy.
There doesn't seem, at least it is not clear, an option in privacy to make what you're searching for private. So that others can't see you as one of the people searching for such and such a thing. If there is an option for that, it should be titled more clearly.
Not sure if this is a bug, but I cant see how to add an article to a category. As well my article ( fireworks) did not fit any categories and I was unable to create one.

[edit] Real name should be optional
Clicking on profile and trying to log in, it disallows me because I do not have my real name filled in. The real name is supposed to be optional.
I do not want my real name used in attributions. Therefore I will not fill it in. (Though this insistence on real name makes me lean towards becoming Herbert Goldthwait the Magnificent Heir of Seven Kingdoms whose fame is matched only by his obscurity.) BrotherE 20:38, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
- BrotherE, if you have legitimate reason to hide you can use a pen name as long as you stick to it and only you know it is not your real name. Real names and realistic pen names respect readers and authors alike. This is a requirement of mature writing, appropriate to Wikia Search and more fun. A pen name that pokes fun at your reader is disrespectful and unsuitable. --Rogerhc 06:21, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

If I move my cursor across the "empty" tab, it changes to an I-bar in some places as if there were a field there, just not visible. I'm using IE 6, WinXP.

[edit] Status time
when I change my status, the time have to be my location time, and not server time!
[edit] Login redirect and login timer
The login page redirects the user to his profile with no way to return to the article that was being edited without losing login (hitting back and reloading loses the session). Also, the timer is far to short for login timeouts, as I was editing fairly consistently and took a minute to write new content and was logged out. -- 70.185.113.153 00:44, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
- Hit back and preview. You can also hit back, copy to clipboard, reload and paste if you prefer. Timer is sometimes a bit odd. Probably has to do with php session garbage collector. --Balinny 18:12, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Footer links broken
The links in page footers are broken. "Contact Us" and "Terms of Use" are broken on the http://alpha.search.wikia.com/ page. On the wiki http://search.wikia.com/wiki/ all the footer links are broken. Hmm

[edit] Unable to search
I enter the search term in the bar and the same page reloads with no results. By default, I don't accept cookies or execute Javascript. Even after turning Javascript on, there was no change in behavior. I'm not sure if this is a Javascript issue or a beta code issue, but either way I'd like to be able to search without having to modify my default settings.
- Allow javascript and reload the page. I'm afraid it doesn't work without JS. It also needs AJAX. --Balinny 12:27, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
- Additional clear you browser cache and disable the firebug(if using firefox and firebug enabled). AJAX Webpages sometimes(i dont know when) have some trouble with Firebug. Best regards --Cy 20:42, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Interference of nicknick name with links
I selected a nickname, but now the signature ~~~~ does not include links to my user or talk page. Fred 12:05, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
- Can't reproduce. Maybe you checked Raw signature? It should be unchecked to auto-link (or you can have it checked and manually include the linking wikitext). --Balinny 18:10, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Your profile bugs.
There are following bugs in "Your profile":
- It asks again to enter username/password even after successful login in "Wiki log in".
- It does not work when correct username/password is supplied.
- Also it seems during registration I typed lowercase username, but later first letter has been changed to be upper case.
—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Decandent (talk • contribs).
- You need to login twice. search:Unresolved issues#Unified login
- If it doesn't work, it isn't so correct...
- First username letter is always shown uppercase (just as page names).

[edit] 'Bad title' error when creating mini-article
I get this message when I try to create a mini article for a web site of which the title contains brackets "[" and "]"
The requested page title was invalid, empty, or an incorrectly linked inter-language or inter-wiki title. It may contain one or more characters which cannot be used in titles.
To generate the error, search for "the huntington project." Click the short description under the first result title to feed the title back into the search. Now click the link for "starting" this article. You will see the error.
[edit] Go Button with Internet Explorer
Hi,
Just noticed an issue with "Go" button. On the following URL
http://alpha.search.wikia.com/
If we leave the search text box blank and click on the "Go" button we received the following error message:
"Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet sire http://re.search.wikia.com/search Operation aborted"
The URL would be redirected to "http://re.search.wikia.com/search". I tried this on Internet Explorer 6.0
Good Luck!

[edit] can't display the page
In the link http://alpha.search.wikia.com/index.html, if we press go button without entering a any data string i am getting the error "Internet Explorer can't open the Internet site http://re.search.wikia.com/search." " Operation aborted".
If i click ok then i am getting page can't be dispalyed.
[edit] Search Results are not easy on the eye
Although it is not a bug, the bright blue on white used in the search results is not very user friendly, in fact it is just plain hard to read. You should look for a better colour scheme
- I fully agree. In general, the screen presentation is poor. The only bright spot is the red background behind Logout! I also think the magnifying glass with the (edit) after each keyword link makes the minis difficult to read, although I do agree it would be useful to keep the (create) function (perhaps without the magnifying glass you recently introduced). By contrast, the conventional blue for the traditional mini links is fully satisfactory.--Ipigott 13:56, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
Greek island search. Where is http://www.greekisland.co.uk ? This is the premier authority site on the Greek islands and top in Google foe a 'greek islands' search yet doesn't appear in your top 40 while rubbish sites with commercial lists of greek cruises with no decent content at all appear in the top 10. What a crap search engine you have created. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.210.183.202 (talk • contribs)

[edit] Mailman CGI Error!!!
I clicked on the "Mailing list" link in the sidebar on this wiki, which goes to http://lists.wikia.com/mailman/listinfo/search-l . I got this error message:
Mailman CGI error!!!
The Mailman CGI wrapper encountered a fatal error. This entry is being stored in your syslog:
Failure to find group name for GID 501. Mailman expected the CGI wrapper to be executed as group "www", but the system's web server executed the wrapper as GID 501 for which the name could not be found. Try adding GID 501 to your system as "www", or tweak your web server to run the wrapper as group "www".
There has been similar reports, but can't reproduce them. Which browser are you using? --Balinny 14:48, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
Hi,
I think it would be great, if Wikipedia would ALWAYS show up in the search results! For example you search Metallica, there should be one result(Metallica - Wikipedia) that is linked to wikipedia.org.
VAZZ in hurry
[edit] Case sensitivity
We need to make the mini-article results in search not case sensitive. There are not a whole lot of people who use capitalization when they make a search. And it being case sensitive is making it so people have to make tons of redundant articles. For instance if you want to write about John Smith, you might need to make duplicate articles entitled "John Smith", "JOHN SMITH", "john smith", "John smith", etc. --Mark (Mschel) 18:51, 14 February 2008 (EST)
- Yes, we know. This need to be sorted out. --Balinny 14:48, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
- Many of us have been complaining about this relatively simple problem to solve since 7 January. It must be THE most important priority for the mini article environment and also for search as the minis will not show up until it is solved. Next on the list is REDIRECT which is closely connected with this. --Ipigott 22:22, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
- Ok, how would you fix it? Make all miniarticles lowercase? What when it has different meanings? What when the keywords are searched in a different order? Should Mini articles from different words appear when there's no specific mini? --Balinny 22:45, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
The usual approach in language processing lookup is:
- Always look for an exact match (of upper/lower case combinations) first, e.g. if their is an entry on pH and the term to be found is pH, you take pH; similarly, if there an entry on PH you take that for PH; if there is no specific capitalisation, both would default to ph.
- Unfortunately, it does not seem possible to write a mini article without an initial capital (which seems to be assigned automatically). This needs to be changed so that you could, for example, distinguish between Brown (proper name) and brown (colour).
- The guidelines seem to encourage full use of capitalisation in the minis although capitals are seldom used in search which is almost always lower case. Either people should be encouraged to use lower case in all mini article titles unless real ambiguities exist; alternatively the system should look up the term without capitals unless a separate lower-case entry already exists.
- The alphabetic sort for existing articles needs to be updated to ensure that upper and lower case articles are correctly sequenced. At the moment, you get all the lower case first then the upper case (see for example the articles displayed under Category US government).
- If the REDIRECT were to function correctly, in the first instance article creators/editors could use it to cover different combinations of upper/lower case. Better still, it could be automated to create automatically a lower case equivalent to an article with upper case in multiterm expressions. In other words Britney Spears would automatically create britney spears. Similarly britney spears could create Britney Spears. This would help with internal linking which at the moment often appears to fail although a valid article (with the wrong case) actually exists. (And this needs to be extended to keyword linking too.)
- Ultimately there could be a clever scan of frequent search terms and search results to identify the probable correct combination of upper and lower case in actual searches. us space program could then be correctly identified as US space program (rather than the pronoun us). But I realise this is not a priority at the moment. (BTW both Yahoo and Google extend this kind of assistance to spelling too.)
So here's something to go on. I hope there are people in the development team who can be encouraged to appreciate the importance of all this for the project as a whole. -- Ipigott 08:15, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Mein Rat:
Sucht eine andere Farbkombination der Schrift.

I have managed to get two different nicknames, and my first one is displayed on search.wikia.com and the second one are displayed here. As far as I know, it's the same account.
The real bug: On the search reasults page my nickname is displayed with a + instead of a space. ("Natanael+L" instead of "Natanael L") Over here: http://re.search.wikia.com/search Natanael L 15:15, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] articlenames in categories
Hi I changed every Mini article in the Category:City_in_Germany I added behind the Category:City_in_Germany the name of the city f.e. [[Category:City_in_Germany|Frankfurt am Main]] There is additional a Mini article Mini:Frankfurt am main which contains {{Mini:Frankfurt am Main}} In the Category:City_in_Germany the article Mini:Frankfurt am main is shown under the letter M. I think it should be under the letter F, like Mini:Frankfurt am Main. Is it my fault, what is wrong?? Best regards --
